On the morning of March 31th, 2021, the National Economics University in collaboration with the Central Economic Committee, the Economic Committee of the National Assembly, V-Startup Investment and Management Group held a National Conference to evaluate Vietnam's economy in 2020 and prospects in 2021 with the theme "Responding to and Overcoming the Covid-19 Pandemic, towards Recovery and Development", and publishing the publication 2020 Vietnam Economic Assessment of the school.
In the conference, there were a lot of delegates, leaders, representatives from internationally and nationally reputable organizations together with university leadership.
At the seminar, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son - the Deputy Head of the Central Economic Commission affirmed that facing the severely negative impacts of the epidemic, Governments in the world in general and Vietnam in particular reacted so quickly and decisively that it has never been before. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of looking back at reality and evaluating the policies used to respond to the pandemic. The assessment in practical terms assists in making recommendations to minimize the economic losses, thereby recovering and developing sustainably. Moreover, it is also theoretically significant in the design and implementation of policies for response to shocks similar to Covid-19.
According to Assoc.Prof.Dr To Trung Thanh - a co-author of the analytical publication the biggest challenge to Vietnam's economy in 2021 is the ability of the economy's resilience before the wave of disease infection returning with the emergence of a new virus variant.
Mr. Jacques Morisset - Chief Economist of the World Bank (WB) in Vietnam assessed that Vietnam has demonstrated its ability to control Covid-19 crisis and has turned the crisis into opportunity. Vietnam has enhanced its presence in global trade and its domestic content of exports and has taken into account the transformation and creation of green technology to maintain a competitive advantage... However, Mr. Jacques Morisset also pointed out new risks of injury: the decrease in households income, the concentration of current social programs on the poor according to national targets and the effectiveness of policy implementation.
At the seminar, economists continued proposing a number of policy recommendations to bring the country through the Covid-19 pandemic including: monetary policy, fiscal policy, social security policy, a combination of short-term and long-term policies,...

This annual research product of the university aims to comprehensively summarize Vietnam's economy in 2020, evaluate the government's policies used to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, from which to propose policy to support the economy to overcome difficulties, and prepare basic conditions for recovery and development in the next period.
