On June 5 2017, National Economics University celebrated World Environment Day (5 June), World Oceans Day (8 June) and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2017.
World Environment Day is the United Nations's most inportant day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of environment. The theme for World Environment Day 2017 is "Connecting people to the nature". World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. Overall theme for World Oceans Day 2017 is "Our Oceans, Our Future". The meeting aimed to improve individual perception of the importance of the healthy, green environment and oceans, islands in marine economy development, safeguard national sovereignty and human lives.
Attending the meeting were Prof.Dr. Tran Tho Dat - President, Assoc Prof.Dr. Le Thu Hoa - Dean of Faculty of Environment and Urban, Assoc Prof.Dr. Le Trung Thanh - Dean of Graduate School, Assoc Prof.Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong - Director of Center for Advanced Educational Programs, Dr. Vu Van Ngoc - Acting Director of Personnel Department, MA. Nguyen Hoang Ha - Director of Political and Student Affairs Office, Dr. Can Anh Tuan - Director of Center for Training Support and Services, MA. Mac Van Tao - Deputy Director of Department of Educational Management, Phar. Le Duc Hung - Head of Clinic, MA. Nguyen Nhat Linh - Secretary of NEU Youth Union.
Making speech at the meeting, Prof.Dr. Tran Tho Dat stated the importance of environmental protection, adaptation to climate change, marine resource protection, sea and islands sovereignty of Vietnam. The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling sea level rise, global temperature rise, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, delining arctic sea ice, glacial retreat, extreme events, ocean acidification and decreased snow cover. It is noticed that the current warming trend is a particular significance because most of it is extremely likely to be the result of human activities. People, especially NEU youths, play an important role in raising social awareness of environment, sea and islands protection through many activities such as clean up campaigns, no smoking, planting trees, recycling paper and plastic items and the like.
Speaking at the meeting, Vu Huy - NEU alumni shared his opinion about environment protection, global warming and sea level rise. He also expressed his desire to contribute to protecting environment.
National Economics University is one of the leading universities in actively promoting propaganda and education aiming to raise awareness and responsibility of officials, lecturers and students in environment protection, climate change adaptation and sea level rise, resource management and biodiversity conservation.
After the meeting, NEU officials, lecturers and students participated in cleaning up the campus.
