On the morning of May 7th ,2018, the seminar on "The economic impact of climate change" was held by the National Economics University in cooperation with the Development Agency France (AFD) and Department of Climate Change - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Attending the Seminar of Science, there were Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat – President of National Economics University; Prof. Mai Trong Nhuan - Former Director of Hanoi National University; Dr. Truong Duc Tri - Deputy Director of Climate Change Department; Assoc. Prof. Etienne Espagne - Representative of GEMMES Vietnam, AFD Paris; Mr. Antonino - Secretary of the Italian Embassy in Vietnam; Ms. Shu Wen - representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; along with experts, scientists from various organizations cross the country.
Making a speech at the seminar, Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat – President of National Economics University warmly welcomed and thanked the experts, scientists who had meaningful works about climate change had taken time to attend the seminar. Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat said that climate change had great impacts on the natural, economic and social systems. In Vietnam, climate change was happening very quickly and far exceeded the recorded levels of extreme weather events. Therefore, Vietnam must step up its emergency response to climate change that was happening faster than predicted.
Assoc. Prof. Etienne Espagne - Representative of GEMMES Vietnam, AFD Paris reaffirmed the importance and urgency of climate change and the seminar was the first step to build a community, network of scientists on climate change.
On behalf of the leaders of the Climate Change Department, Dr Truong Duc Tri, Deputy Director General of the Climate Change Department said that climate change was a complex issue researched under many aspects. The climate should be invested in basic, scientific and high-value research such as studying climate change adaptation solutions for each ecological region of Vietnam, cost - benefits of climate change, the development of greenhouse gases, carbon pricing, etc. are all of urgent and long-term research.
Through the discussion, after 16 speeches presented by experts, the research team had received many comments and exchanges. There were a number of initiatives that had made practical sense in protecting the environment and sustainable development. The proposals of scientists could become the arguments for the authorities to refer and use in the policy-making process in the coming time
